This is the story of a woodman who lived in a forest.
He was a big devotee of Lord Shiva. But being a woodman he never had any education and didn’t know any rituals. He just wanted to worship Shiva.
One day he found a Shivlinga in the forest so he prayed to his god and offered the animal’s flesh to Shivlinga. He came the next day and did the same thing and started it on daily basis.
One priest came to Shivlinga every 15 days to clean it and do his prayer. So when he saw the animal’s flesh on Shivlinga, he thought maybe an animal had done it. So he cleaned the Shivlinga and did his prayer.
The woodman continued his prayer and offered flesh to Shivlinga on daily basis. One day he saw that Shivlinga was dirty so he decided to clean it. He didn’t have any pot to bring the water so he used his hand and mouth to bring the water from the river. To clean the Shivlinga he gargled and offer the flesh.
When after 15 days the priest came, he saw spits and the animal’s flesh on Shivalinga. He got very angry and asked Lord Shiva, “Why are you accepting this insult, my lord? Why are you not punishing this man?”
So Lord Shiva replied “he is one of my greatest devotees just like you. So whatever he offers me, I’ll accept that.” Then Lord Shiva asked the priest to hide somewhere and watch what he will do.
After some time, the woodman came and prayed and then offers flesh to Lord Shiva. But he noticed something strange this time. There were two eyes on Shivlinga and both are bleeding. He scared and didn’t understand what to do. He thought if I offer my eye to Shivlinga so maybe it stopped bleeding. So he takes off one eye with a knife and offers it to Shivlinga. After that, one of Shivlinga eye stopped bleeding. But one continued to bleeding. So he understood that he needs to offer his second eye too. He put his feet on Shivlinga so he doesn’t miss to offer when he blind. Then he takes off his second eye and offers to Shivlinga.
The priest was in shock, he never thought that someone can do this much for their lord in devotion.
Then Lord Shiva appeared and gave the eyes to the woodman. He got a new vision. Then Lord Shiva asked his devotee to ask for a boon. And he just asks devotion and blessing as a boon.
